Items Eligible for Tax-free Service

Tax-free Procedure Steps

Step 1

Tell the staff at the cash register that you would like tax-free service.

Note: The tax-free procedure takes about ten minutes.

Step 2

Please let the staff know if you would like to exclude any of your items from the tax-free service.

Note: If you would like consumable items to be tax-free, please note that they cannot be used in Japan.
Note: General items that you plan to use in Japan cannot be included in a tax-free purchase with consumable items.

Step 3

Please present your passport or other identification that can be used when applying for tax-free service. (Passport, Crew Landing Permit, Emergency Landing Permit, or Landing Permission Due to Distress)

Step 4

The procedure that will designate your purchases as tax-free will take place.

Step 5

The staff will enter the required purchase information for tax-free service into a computer. This may take some time, so please wait.

Step 6

Apply for a consumption tax refund.
Scan the QR code on the Tax-Refund Card provided at the register, or access the refund application site using the URL below to complete your refund application.

Step 7

Please note the following important points:

• The items purchased are to be brought back to your home country. Do not dispose of them in Japan.
• Be sure to show your passport to the customs officer at the airport when you leave Japan.
• If you do not have the items you purchased tax free with you when you leave Japan, you may have to pay taxes on them.

You Cannot Shop Tax-free If…

• There is no stamp in your passport confirming when you entered the country.
• It has been more than six months since you entered the country.
• You work in Japan.
• The amount of your purchases does not meet the required threshold.

Important Notes

• Consumable items purchased tax-free are sealed in a plastic bag to ensure they are not used within Japan.
• Do not open the plastic bag that contains your consumable tax-free purchases. If you do, then you may be asked to pay taxes on the items when you leave the country.

Other Notes

• You must bring the items you purchase tax-free with you out of the country.
• If the items you purchase are for business purposes or re-selling, then they cannot be purchased tax-free.
• Tax-free service can only be applied for on the date of purchase. Tax-free service cannot be applied for on any date other than the date of purchase.

Short-term visitors to Japan, as well as those who work for foreign governments or international government bodies, are eligible for tax-free service. Those who work for a company located in Japan and those who have been in the country for more than six months are ineligible for tax-free service.

Tax-free service cannot be applied in the following four cases:

3. You work for a company in Japan.
4. The purchase amount does not meet the threshold required for tax-free purchases.
